Highly Skilled Migrant
What?
The Dutch highly skilled migrant scheme is intended to be a relatively easy why for companies to attract highly skilled staff from abroad and relocate them to the Netherlands.
Permit requirements:
This scheme has three main criteria. The first being the salary requirement. The following salary requirements apply as of January 1st 2023:
- Highly skilled migrant over the age of 30: € 5.008
- Highly skilled migrant under the age of 30: € 3.672
- Orientation year highly educated: € 2.631
Secondly requirement is that the offered salary must be market conform. Meaning that is has to be a reasonable salary for a person with a specific profile for the offered job. Simply put, someone with no schooling and skills at all will not likely earn €4500 for cleaning lavatories.
Last but not least the employer must be a so-called recognized sponsor. This is a pre-approval by the Immigration service that a company is sufficiently reliable and solvable to pay for the salary of a highly skilled migrant.
Recognized sponsor?
Before being allowed to employ a highly skilled migrant the company must itself apply for the status of recognized sponsor. On the IND website there is a public registry of companies that have already been approved as a recognized sponsor.
Not only does recognized sponsorship offer companies the possibility to make use of this scheme, it also entails that the IND will strive (not always successfully) to decide upon an application within two weeks.
And then?
Upon approval the highly skilled migrant will get permit which is equal to the length of the duration of the labor contract. This can vary between a couple months to five years.
Family members may also join the highly skilled migrant and will be allowed to work freely (without prior permission) on the Dutch employment market.
