Temporary protection extended with six months
Recently the IND had announced that the extension of the special protection did not apply to persons with a temporary residence in Ukraine such as work, or study related residence permits. Today the IND has published in its website that the special protection of this category has been extended for six months until September 4th of this year.
Effectively persons who initially would lose their residency under this scheme, now will have their residency and above all their working rights extended until September 4th 2023.
What happens after September 4th?
Because all refugees from Ukraine had formally signed an asylum application upon collecting their proof residence, the IND will start in the coming months with processing the asylum applications from third-country nationals with a temporary residence permit in Ukraine. This will be done in phases. The IND has given priority to two groups:
- People from a safe country of origin (approximately 1200 people)
- People from Syria and Yemen who have a good chance of being granted asylum in the Netherlands (approximately 100 people).
Persons not falling under one of these two categorie are not given priority over other asylum seekers who have been waiting for a decision from the IND for quite some time.
We will monitor the developments on the coming months and keep you informed on any changes.
